Can XBox 360 Arcade play games for the original XBox?

Question by Franklin: Can XBox 360 Arcade play games for the original XBox?
On the XBox website there is a comparison between the Arcade and Elite versions. For the Elite it says "ALL XBOX 360 GAMES + OVER 300 XBOX GAMES" but for the Arcade it just says "ALL XBOX 360 GAMES".

Am I to understand that the consoles are programmed differently and the Arcade can NOT play original xbox games?
